Acceptable to buy return ticket with different start/end points?

I know return tickets are issued as two one-ways, so as long as I am starting/ending in the same zone, can I buy a return ticket that I intend to begin/end travel at different points? Specifically, I want to:

  • go from Paris to Versailles:  RER C Saint Michel Notre Dame to VICK Gare de Versailles Château / Rive Gauche
  • return from Versailles to Paris: RER C Versailles – Chantiers to Gare Montparnasse

Can I just buy a return ticket for this routing?
Also, I'm a bit confused about getting tickets going from Chatelet (to Gare de l'Est) to Verneuil-l'Étang (going to Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte). I figured out that it's in Zone 6 and it's listed as a STIF route, but I can't seem to figure out the cost and where can I buy the tickets? I was hoping to be able to pre-buy all my Metro/Train tickets on my arrival day while I wait at the CDG T2 train station - can I get it from one of the machines there? Do I use a carnet ticket to go from Chatelet to Gare de l"Est and then use another ticket to carry on to l'Etang?
Any insights into these would be much appreciated. (=
BTW, FANTASTIC site - I've learnt so much - thx a mint for the obvious amount of effort you've put into it!
cheers,

3.55€ for each RER ticket between Saint Michel Notre Dame to Versailles Rive Gauche / Versailles Chantier to Montparnasse so yes, you could just buy two of the same RER ticket.  You don't strictly need a separate routing since they're the same cost.

Verneuil-l'Etang is in Paris zone 5 (RATP made zone 6 become part of zone 5) costs 8.40€ one way and can be bought at Gare de l'Est or any Metro/RER ticket window or Transilien ticket machine.

Yes you would use a regular Ticket t+ to get from Chatelet to Gare de l'Est although if you buy the RER ticket from Chatelet for Verneuil l'Etang, you don't need a separate ticket, just use the same RER ticket throughout. (There may be no turnstiles/gates for the train from Gare de l'Est to Verneuil if it's Transilien brand train, you just walk onto the platform & board the train, but keep your ticket with you as there may be a gate when you arrive.
